Many general dentists must refer patients to outside specialists when they need to undergo a complex procedure. That can cause some patients to be nervous, and it may lead to confusion about insurance, payment, and the overall treatment plan. Conversely, at New Haven Dental Group, we are able to perform the vast majority of procedures in-house, including even complex treatments. Our general dentists and specialists work together with the goal of providing each patient with a comfortable, streamlined experience from beginning to end. This page explains a few of the advanced oral surgery services we offer.
The term “surgery” might seem a bit intimidating, but we always strive to keep these procedures as conservative and minimally invasive as possible. Although the oral surgery experience varies from patient to patient, you might go through the following stages of treatment:
The root canal is the space inside the root of a tooth that contains the pulp, a substance made up of nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels. When damage or an infection reaches the pulp, the result can be a nightmarish toothache. Left untreated, the infection could even spread into the surrounding tissue. While extraction is one way to address an infected tooth, we often recommend root canal surgery instead. During the procedure, we clean out the infected or damaged area of the tooth. Then, we fill in the tooth with a special material. In most cases, we place a crown on top of the treated tooth to protect it against further damage.
We make every effort to help our patients retain their natural dentition. However, extractions are sometimes necessary. In such cases, we numb the area and use special dental instruments to remove the tooth as gently as possible. If an extraction is relatively simple, the recovery period might last for just a few days. In many cases, we are able to later replace patients’ extracted teeth with dental implants or a fixed bridge.
Learn More About Tooth Extractions
We do not always recommend wisdom teeth extractions for our patients. We will monitor the teeth and suggest removal only if we believe it is necessary for your oral health and overall well-being. If you do decide to get the teeth extracted, we will perform the procedure as gently as possible. However, because wisdom teeth are often impacted (stuck beneath the gum line), we may have to create an incision in the gums and perhaps even break the teeth into pieces.
