At New Haven Dental Group, we pride ourselves on providing our patients with satisfactory treatment results, whether they come to us for extensive restorative work, or they just want to give their smile a brand-new look. If the latter is true of you, we might recommend that you undergo dental bonding — which is sometimes called direct bonding — to transform teeth whose appearance does not fit in with your ideal image. This page explains more about what dental bonding is and what you can expect from the process.
During the direct bonding process, we mold a tooth-colored resin over a tooth. We shape it in a way that disguises the tooth’s flaws. Some issues that direct bonding can hide include:
The treatment process for direct bonding begins when we select the right shade for the bonding material. We take great care to make sure that it will blend in with the surrounding dentition. Then, we prepare the teeth. To do so, we simply apply a mild etching solution to roughen the surface of the enamel. We also place a conditioning liquid on the teeth. These steps help to ensure that the resin will adhere well to them. Next, we carefully mold the resin onto the teeth. A special curing light hardens it in a matter of seconds. Finally, we trim and polish the resin until we achieve the desired result.
Depending on how many teeth are receiving the bonding, your appointment may take an hour or so. The process is quite comfortable; in most cases, no anesthesia is necessary. You will be able to eat and drink immediately after your treatment.
Some of the most outstanding benefits of direct bonding include:
Direct bonding may be the perfect choice for you if you are looking for a simple, fast way to transform just one or two teeth whose appearance bothers you. However, if you want a complete smile makeover, or you are looking for longer-lasting results, porcelain veneers may be the more appropriate option.
When you visit us for your cosmetic consultation, we will carefully listen to your goals and answer your questions about all of your treatment options. Then, you can make a confident, fully informed choice about how to go about achieving your dream smile.
