Does a Broken Denture Count as a Dental Emergency?

When you think about dental emergencies, your mind probably goes to things like toothaches, broken teeth, and serious oral wounds. Certainly, all of those situations deserve urgent attention. But what about a broken denture? After all, a denture is not technically part of your body, so you might reason that you can delay treatment. The truth is, though, that a broken denture is a good reason to request an emergency dental appointment! This blog post discusses why that is the case.

The Importance of Dentures

Your mouth serves as the beginning of your digestive system. If you cannot use your dentures to help you thoroughly chew your food, you might miss out on key nutrients. You could also suffer from a degree of indigestion. You might even experience embarrassment in social situations due to an inability to enjoy the same foods as everyone else.

Of course, dentures do more than help you eat. They can also help you to speak with crispness and clarity. Without them, you might find it more difficult to communicate confidently.

Should You Try to Repair Your Denture on Your Own?

Some pharmacies carry denture repair kits, but extreme caution is in order. Without professional knowledge of how to repair your prosthetic, you might end up worsening the damage. Some people have even tried to use household items, such as superglue, to fix their dentures. They have caused serious irritation to their oral tissues. Repairing dentures can be a delicate process; they deserve a professional touch.

What Your Dentist Can Do

Your dentist does not want you to have to live without your denture for one moment longer than necessary. They will likely be able to get you in for an emergency appointment within a few days of when you call their office.

During your visit, your dentist will evaluate the damage to your prosthetic. In some cases, they are able to perform same-day repairs in house. However, if your denture requires more extensive work, it might need to be sent to a dental lab. There is also a possibility that you will need to purchase an entirely new denture.

A broken denture is a big deal! Take fast action so your smile can get back on track ASAP.
