Some people think of Invisalign as a purely cosmetic treatment. In reality, though, it is much more than that. Not only can it improve the appearance of teeth, but it can also reverse or lower the risk of numerous oral health problems. In some cases, fixing TMJ with Invisalign in New Haven is even possible. Read on below to learn what causes TMJ problems and how clear aligners may be able to help.

What Causes TMJ Problems?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the rest of the skull. Problems that afflict the TMJ are collectively known as TMJ disorder, TMJ dysfunction, or simply TMD. TMD can be caused by a range of issues, including injury, arthritis, stress, poor posture, and more. In some cases, the cause is unknown.

Often, however, the main culprit behind TMD is a bad bite, also known as a malocclusion. Overbite, underbite, cross bite, and open bite can all place strain on the TMJ, causing it to work extra hard whenever you eat or speak. Unpleasant symptoms, including pain, difficulty chewing, headaches, and more, may result.

Invisalign and TMD

Invisalign is a suitable treatment for many cases of malocclusion. By moving the teeth into their proper places, it promotes a harmonious relationship between the lower and upper jaws. Invisalign clear aligners often work along with accessories, such as elastics, to train the lower jaw to rest in a position that places as little stress as possible on the TMJ.

Once you complete a course of Invisalign treatment, you may notice that many of your TMD symptoms are lessened or even gone altogether. Throughout your Invisalign treatment, you may need to use other means to find relief from the pain of your condition until the positioning of your teeth and jaw are successfully corrected.

Of course, it is important to remember that Invisalign is not a “one size fits all” treatment for bite misalignment or TMJ problems. The best way to address your symptoms depends on the specifics of your case.

Getting Started with Treatment

If you are struggling with TMD symptoms, visit a dentist who is qualified to diagnose and treat your disorder. After they thoroughly evaluate the positioning of your teeth and bite, they will recommend your next steps. If it looks like Invisalign would benefit you, they can get started on designing your series of custom aligners.

If it seems that Invisalign may not be able to address your TMD, your dentist can suggest other ways to relieve your pain. For example, you may need a nightguard to prevent teeth grinding. Some people also benefit from at-home remedies. If your case is unusual or severe, you might be referred to a specialist.

TMD is a complex condition, and there is no universally effective treatment for it. In many cases, though, Invisalign can help patients find long-term relief.
